Another TS - the Texas Syndicate:

Dec. 25th, 2006 | 08:57 am

Scumballs, yes, but what a nice tattoo:

From Wikipedia:

Formed in the early 1970s, the Texas Syndicate was established in Folsom Prison as a direct response to the other California prison gangs, such as the Aryan Brotherhood and Mexican Mafia, that preyed upon Mexican-American inmates from Texas, usually in the El Paso and San Antonio areas. Today, the gang accepts members from Latin American countries such as Colombia, Cuba, and Mexico. The gang holds a belief of Hispanic and Latino supremacy ideology and has committed crimes, such as drug trafficking, extortion, pressure rackets and contract murder within the prison system.

Members are tattooed with the letters TS usually obscured in the design of the tattoo. Generally the tattoo is located on the back of the right forearm; it can also be found on the outside calf areas, neck, and chest. One arm, usually the right, will appear much larger than the other. Members and affiliates of the Texas Syndicate also use Longhorns and UT apparel and logos, to represent the Texas connection. Belt buckles with a Longhorn are mostly used by high ranking members of the Texas Syndicate. These members have a rank similar to that of a Don in the Italian/Sicilian Mafia 'La Cosa Nostra.'

The creed of the Texas Syndicate: Play your fellow Texas Syndicate member's back. Respeto al Don Fetti, el Criollo.

fREe-ZONING

May. 8th, 2006 | 11:06 am

We traveled to Lafayette and West Lafayette, Indiana about six weeks ago to participate in a workshop with members of the Purdue University community. After a great day of walking, talking, and exploring alternative methods of using public space, all of the workshop participants collaborated with us on a booklet that we titled fREe-ZONING...possibly one of the quickest and most fun layouts and paste-ups in TS booklet history!

The Purdue group will be visiting us up at Mess Hall this weekend, to debut the booklet and do some presentations and workshops of their own.

Chicagolanders, please join us! Mess Hall is at 6932 N Glenwood, Chicago (more info at www.messhall.org):

This Friday and Saturday please join us as we release the "fREe-ZONING" booklet full of ideas for street interventions to the sounds of electronic music from out in Indiana, stencil the street with cornstarch painting and make sketchbooks on no budget.

The booklet release party and workshop is an exchange between Temporary Services and a group from Purdue University. In early March, Temporary Services held a workshop in the Art and Design department at Purdue. It was two days filled with discussion, getting to know Lafayette, Indiana's active local scene and brainstorming on public interventions.

Working at a brisk pace in a classroom on a diet of pizza, fruit and coffee, all of us made drawings, writings and collages that resulted in a 36 page booklet. An extremely efficient and energetic bit of collaborating! It went so well, the Purdue group has been invited to Mess Hall to give a workshop of its own.

Friday, May 12, 7:30-9:30 PM
Booklet Release Party, Stenciling, Live music from Drum Kit!

Found Materials Workshop--All ages welcome!

The Purdue group leads a FREE workshop on transforming found materials. Using found paper and various binding materials scavenged from outside around Mess Hall, the group from Purdue will lead a workshop. They will show how to create a variety of paper forms including miniature portfolios and sketchbook designs. This workshop is suitable for all ages and skill levels. Feel free to bring your kids.

The Purdue group is: Liz Erlewine, Esteban Garcia, Nien Hsieh, Nick Martin, Brishen Vanderkolk, Linda Vanderkolk, Cheryl Yun. The workshop at Purdue was inititated by Rosanne Altstatt.
